Back in 2005, Emmit Martin, the store owner, found inspiration 4 hours south of Nashville, in Atlanta, Georgia. He ran the Peachtree Road Race, the largest 10K road race in the country. Emmit was struck by the party-like atmosphere of the race, the incredible camaraderie, the massive range in abilities participating, and the immense community support. It was in stark contrast to most of the other races in which he had participated or observed.
That led to the creation of his race management company in 2005, now named What Do You Run For?, whose events sought to create a slightly less competitive more welcoming model of race that had a greater social aspect with post-race parties. These events were a welcome change from the previous racing status quo in Nashville.
But it also planted a seed that grew quietly in the background for 12 years; a seed that began to invade his thoughts more and more as Nashville’s population, and indeed the fast growth of the running community along with it, began exploding.
He wondered: What if there were a running store located in the heart of Music City that embraced that same sense of fun, support, and inclusiveness. What if he could create a store that could cater to all runners and walkers – from seasoned speedsters seeking technical expertise on the latest footwear all the way to walkers taking their first brave steps to losing weight or improving their health. What if there were a store situated within 8 blocks of 40,000 Nashvillians’ homes that was a hub for runners and fitness enthusiasts, offering not just a premium shopping experience, but also a source of education and inspiration.
Emmit is not one to ponder what-ifs for very long! In the summer of 2017, with the help of his friend Dave Milner, he opened the doors of Rhythm Running on Demonbreun Street, between the Gulch and Music Row, and just a mile from downtown.
Rhythm Running offers the very best in footwear, apparel, nutrition and accessories geared towards runners, walkers, and fitness enthusiasts, whatever their age, ability, or background. Championing the slogan, “It’s your rhythm. Run to it,” Martin and his team at Rhythm Running will educate, motivate and encourage runners in the Nashville community and beyond to inspire one another to run, no matter what their tempo may be.
